Description

Big Top™ Caramel Apple offers effortless elegance. Its striking foliage shifts from spring burgundy to summer gold, topped by dainty blooms that attract bees and hummingbirds. Growing into a bold, robust mound that naturally deters deer and boasts excellent heat tolerance, it delivers exquisite beauty with a low-maintenance, worry-free nature.

Plant Care

Water

Soil should be consistently moist, but never soggy. Newly Planted (first 6 weeks): Water every 2 to 4 days. Check the soil frequently to ensure the original root ball does not dry out completely. Established Plants (After 1 Season): Water once or twice a week during extended dry spells. If your garden receives 1 inch of rainfall during the week, you do not need to add extra water. Potted Coral Bells: Water when the top 1 to 2 inches of soil feel dry. Containers dry out much faster than garden beds and may require watering every couple of days during peak summer heat

Fertilizer

In Ground: Apply a single, light application of a balanced, slow-release fertilizer (like a 10-10-10 formula) once a year in early spring just as new growth emerges. In Containers: Apply a diluted, half-strength liquid fertilizer once a month during the spring and summer growing season, as nutrients leach out of pots quickly during watering.

Pruning

Pruning isn’t necessary, but a few steps throughout the year will keep it looking great: Early Spring: Cut away any old, tattered, or winter-damaged leaves right at the base of the plant. This clears the way for the bright burgundy new growth to emerge. Mid-to-Late Summer: Once the creamy white flowers fade and turn brown, snip the tall flower stalks off at the very base of the plant. This redirects energy back into growing lush, colorful foliage. Throughout the Year: Trim off any individual leaves that turn yellow, brown, or dry out to maintain a clean appearance.

Seasons of Interest

New leaves emerge with a vibrant burgundy-red tone, adding a sharp burst of color to the garden as it wakes up from winter. In late spring, thin, dark purple flower stalks begin rising well above the low mound of foliage.

As the leaves mature in the heat, they transition into a rich harvest gold and caramel-brown color, often maintaining distinct dark red undertones or variegation. Dainty, bell-shaped creamy white flowers bloom in abundance. These nectar-rich spikes are excellent for attracting hummingbirds and butterflies to shady areas.

The robust caramel and harvest-gold hues persist deeply into the autumn months. They offer an excellent warm color contrast next to late-season garden plants or fall containers.
