Hydrangea paniculata 'AJ14' PP 30,983
Shrub
Height 2.5'
Spread 2.5'
Early Evolution' sets buds weeks earlier than other panicle hydrangeas. Blooms start creamy white, age to pink, and turn a rich burnished shade by fall. Its compact, slow growth and strong stems prevent drooping, making it a perfect container thriller or bed edger. Tough and hardy, it thrives in polluted cities and tolerates sun and drought well. It also makes excellent cut or dried flowers.
Water
Moist, well-drained soil
Fertilizer
Apply a slow-releasa fertilizer like 10-10-10 in early spring as soon as you see new growth or swelling buds.To support long bloom cycle, a second light application can be made in early summer. Cease all fertilization by late July as feeding encourages tender new growth that can be severely damaged by first frosts.
Pruning
Prune the shrub back in later winter or very early spring to encourage new growth.
Spring
Flower buds begin forming. The flowers emerge in a refreshing lime-white or creamy-green shade, providing cool color as the garden transitions into summer.
Summer
The flower panicles transition to a crisp, bright white. Because the stems are exceptionally sturdy, these large blooms remain upright even after heavy summer rains. By late Summer, the white flowers begin their "evolution," blushing into shades of salmon and soft pink.
Fall
The blossoms deepen into a dramatic dark pink or rosy-red. The leaves may take on subtle purple or bronze tints before dropping for the winter.
Winter
If the flower heads are left on the plant, they dry to a tan or papery bronze color
