Seasons of Interest

Like most switchgrasses, it is late to wake up in the spring. To maintain its neat look, it requires minimal maintenance—simply cut or mow the brown stems back to the ground level in late winter or early Spring just before the brand-new green shoots emerge.

The plant starts the growing season with tight, upright columns of neat, blue-green foliage. By mid-to-late summer, it produces its main feature: a crown of large, billowy, feathery flower panicles in warm, dusty smoky-rose and pinkish-purple tones. Autumn: As temperatures cool down, the sturdy foliage transitions from dark green into rich, dramatic shades of deep burgundy, bronze, and golden yellow. The rose-colored seed heads naturally age into a soft, smoky tan.

Unlike many perennials that collapse, this cultivar has an exceptionally durable, non-floppy habit. The tan stems and seed heads remain completely vertical through the cold months, offering excellent structural texture against winter snow while providing a vital food source and shelter for local songbirds.
